Gude Landfill Problems

The January meeting of the Alliance will feature a presentation on issues of concern regarding the Gude Landfill.  The presentation will be done by Julia Tillery and other members of the Derwood Station Community who have done extensive research on the situation which exists at the Gude Landfill site.  The Gude Landfill, which opened in 1965 and closed in 1982, is currently under consideration for relocating approximately 400 school buses.  In addition the Solid Waste Division proposes that the yard trim and wood processing facility to be moved from the Rt. 355 Transfer Station to the Gude Landfill site.  These recommendations have raised concerns from the neighboring community.  As a result of research the community has carried out, they have become aware of the many problems which currently exist at the site.  These problems include toxic gas, water pollution, fire hazards, air pollution, unstable land and noise pollution.  These problems will be exacerbated if the school buses and yard waste facilities are relocated to the Gude Landfill site.

According to the master plan, currently in effect, the community was promised a park when the landfill gas was no longer a problem.  That hasn’t happened yet and has not even been discussed because the land is considered too unstable now. To pave it over and bring in 400 school buses would only increase the effects and problems that currently exist.

Come to the meeting and find out more about what exists in our community and support the Derwood Station community in their efforts to keep a bad situation from becoming worse.

Casey 7

The Department of Transportation is recommending that EMOC (the Ride On bus depot and maintenance facility) which is currently located on Crabbs Branch Way be relocated to Casey 7.  Casey 7 is currently the empty field across from the Grove Shopping Center.  Besides being an eyesore to the community and creating additional traffic congestion EMOC will generate a great deal of heavy bus traffic with its accompanying air and noise pollution.

Casey 7 is located approximately ½ mile from the metro.  At other Metro locations in the Washington DC area, there have been great efforts in making the increasingly dense Metro sites appealing and improving the surrounding community.  Over 6,000 housing new residential units are being planned for the Shady Grove Metro location.  This includes over 300 in the area around the Grove Shopping Center.  To use a site which is within walking distance form Metro to house buses is in opposition to all Smart Growth policy recommendations.  Amenities, such as restaurants, movie theaters, shops, etc. to serve the existing and planned residents of Derwood should be at the top of the priorities for the County Government.  The bus systems in other Maryland and Virginia locations which serve the end of the line Metro system are all located many miles away from the end of the line Metro site.

For too long the Derwood community has been and continues to be literally the dumping ground of Montgomery County.  It is time to let our elected representatives know that Derwood already has more than it’s share of undesirable industrial sites.  Please contact your County Council members and ask them not to put EMOC in such close proximity to Metro.
